Computational Physicist | Research Software Engineer

I am a mathematician at heart. I ended up with a PhD in physics instead, computational cosmology at UC Berkeley, and I now work as a research software engineer. The problems I like have always sat between physics, mathematics and statistics, and computer science rather than inside any one of them.

This blog is mostly things I had to work out properly before I could use them. JIT compilers and JAX, reproducibility, high-performance computing, and sometimes a piece of mathematics. Most of it started as a talk and got written up afterwards.

I also do agentic engineering, and I argue for AI literacy and AI ethics. Some of the posts here are about those tools rather than about physics.

The formal version, with CV, publications and research interests, is at kolen.dev.
